[Video] A look at the New Dwarf Intro/Starter Zone
Jan 17th
Yes, I am quite aware how late I am to the party folks… but I have worked out my YouTube issues and encoding issues and finally have this video ready for you all! Today I bring you a 1 hour video set showing off the massive changes to the Dwarf Intro Instance and Starter Zone. Since YouTube removed my time limit on videos I have managed to fit everything into 2 videos of ~30 min each.
There is no commentary, just in game music and sound.
As you can see from the videos, Turbine has managed to completely revamp the whole experience. The story line now makes more sense and everything flows together a bit smoother.
There are, of course, a few minor things – like the path in the Intro Silver Deep that is said to have “crumbled” but clearly shows that it was never meant to be a path, and the long back and forth walks early on in the Starter Zone.
Other than a few nitpicks the new Dwarf Intro/Starter Zone revamp is a huge success to me. I love the way Turbine portrayed the corruption of the Dourhands.
I hope you all enjoy the videos and feel free to let me know what you think.

LOTRO Reporter Episode 66: Hobbits in Hoardale
Dec 5th
Before we get to the show, I have to apologize for the audio quality this week. This situation has been resolved, and it won’t happen again. For those of you keeping score at home, yep, Chris screwed up again. Sorry!
This week, we discuss the November update going live, the Steed of the Night, and the Turbine contest for 100,000 Turbine Points. We also have a special collaborative PvMP tip of the week, and we discuss the LOTRO Reporter for the Holidays contest, and the Random Acts of Kindness contest with some cool Taverncraft prizes!
We also have some email this week:
From Mosshammer:
This is hilarious! It’s one of the line under “items” in the release notes. It reads:
- The tooltip for the thingy no longer incorrectly claims it is a whatchamacallit.

Awesomeness all around!! If I see anything else I’ll let you know!
From Hoss:
Hey guys, I was catching up on some old episodes that I’d missed and in one of the shows you were complaining about not being able to bind commands to a key. There is a way, although it’s not an eloquent solution.Bind the command to a quick slot, for example: /shortcut 49 /bow
This will put the bow emote in your number 49 quick slot. Then open your options panel and go to the key bindings section. Change the key binding for slot 49 to whatever key you’d like. Pressing that key will now trigger the corresponding slash-command.
This, of course, eats up a valuable quick slot. What I do to free up slots is keep my consumables, map, alternate weapons etc all together in one inventory bag. I play with this bag open all the time and activate those items straight from the bag. Voilà, instantly pick up an extra 15 quick slots.

From Nick:
Dear LoTRO Reporter,
I just wanted to send a quick e-mail thanking you for the site. The weekly podcast is a great listen while I play the game. I also like the articles on the different classes. I am an admitted altaholic and LotRO Reporter has helped me get all the info I need for an informed class decision. That said, I don’t know what I want to main just yet, but I’m leaning towards a Captain. Hopefully I’ll stick with it, but I promise nothing!
Again, thanks for the podcast and your site’s articles. I really appreciate having the resource.
From Hudd:
Morning, hope all is well up north.
Random thoughts on skirmish soldiers:
I would like to have a “Scroll of Skirmish Soldier Renewal”, much like the reset of all soldiers in one of the expansions. This would allow me to try out other soldier types, switching from a warrior to a protector or any soldier type. It would also give me the ability to try out different training and skills to make a better skirmish soldier to my style of play.
I believe I would use these scrolls many more times than the “scrolls of renewal” or “lesser renewal” for points on the legendary weapons.
Have a good one!

Random Act of Kindness Contest – Taverncraft provides the incentive!
Nov 30th
LOTRO Reporter is happy to announce that we will once again be holding our Random Acts of Kindness contest. This contest encourages your to do onto others as you would have them do onto you. We’re trying to encourage players to help their fellow man, hobbit, dwarf, elf, or even creep!
Take a look after the break to find out how the contest will work!
Did You Know…
Nov 24th
As listeners of the LOTRO Reporter podcast may know, I am well and truly hooked on PvMP. My warg feels like an extension of myself, and whenever a coworker is starting to bother me, I wish I could run behind a tree, pop into Stealth Mode, dash out and Pounce them to shut them up, Maul them to really get my point across, and then Disappear to confuse and annoy them…..
Anyway, this post is not all about my confusion between the game and reality! I am here to talk about the Destiny Points system, a system that may be underused by a large population of players. Destiny Points (DP) are gained on the Free Peoples side (that’s dwarves, elves, men, and hobbits) by gaining levels for your characters. So, if you are an alt-a-holic and are leveling many characters, your DP will go up fairly quickly. DP is very useful before a big fight to gain temporary buffs, such as increased speed, morale, or power. I once cashed in a bunch of DP on increased speed so that I could run into the Trollshaws and Rivendell at an insanely low level, leaving my enemy pursuers in the dust. (That’s not to say that I didn’t squeal in terror like a little girl as gigantic bears tried to chase me down!)
On the Monster Player side (that’s wargs, spiders, orcs, and uruks), the DP is more liberally doled out. All quests completed as a creep gain DP, since DP is the main source of currency for gaining new skills and abilities for your creep. Again, DP can also be used to gain temporary buffs to speed, morale, power, and so on.
Now, here is the really cool thing. Did you know that DP is shared amongst your characters? All your characters. Both freeps and creeps. So, here is the thing, if you want to take advantage of the buying power of Destiny Points, you need to maximize their influx. Before I became a creep, the DP was coming rather slowly. I enjoyed using the points for buffs before big boss fights, or for making sure I always had the “rested XP” bonus (a bonus that allows your character to gain experience points more quickly), but I didn’t have a steady supply of them.
But playing a Monster Player changed all that. As I mentioned, every quest you complete gains you DP, from 125 DP for simple solitary quests to 2000 DP for fellowship quests. For the quests that give 2000 DP, Monster Players generally keep several alts just to make multiple runs at those quests. If you’re at all serious about Monster Play, you will spend a lot of that DP on your creeps, but you can save some for your freeps, too! If you really want to!
