LOTRO Free-to-Play: My Thoughts
Jun 7th
I was quite shocked on Friday morning as I got prepared for work, turned on my computer, checked my Twitter feed, and low and behold, there where several tweets about LOTRO going Free-to-Play. Now, having just read an article over at Mordor or Bust (see the article here), where the prediction was made that LOTRO would go Free-to-Play in 2010, I thought that these tweets where in reference to that. Little did the author know at the time how true this prediction would be!

I’ve written a few posts about the recent announcement from Turbine that LOTRO would be moving to a Free-to-Play model. Please comment on the individual posts, and I will edit as any new information comes in.
I’ve also made this post sticky for the next little while, to help you find all of the Free-to-Play information as it come out. For our regular content, just look below this post.

LOTRO Free-to-Play: Interpreting the FAQ
Jun 6th
A Free-to-Play (F2P) FAQ was posted to the lotro.com when the announcement was made that LOTRO was going F2P. This FAQ attempts to answer most of the questions that players will have regarding the switch to the F2P model.
You can find the FAQ here.
Some of the juicy bits include explaining the difference between the different Tiers of player, which I explain in this post.
It also discusses what will occur with the Founders and Lifetime subscribers. Founders, from what I can see, will get nothing different than anyone else who has the same subscription as they do, except for what they gain in the Loyalty Rewards Special Offer, which I explain here.
Another few noteworthy points:
- Previous subscribers, or those who bought the game, played, but never subscribed, will automatically gain Premium Player status.
- You can earn Turbine Points in game, although the mechanics for this are not explained.
- Trial account holders will NOT be given Premium Players status, but will instead be considered Free Players.
- If you become a VIP, some of the benefits that you gain, such as increased Gold Cap and Inventory Cap, become permanent on your account. If you downgrade to Premium from VIP, can can keep the VIP benefits for gold and inventory, character slots, and some others.
- No PvMP for free or premium players. Further discussion on Twitter and in the forums has confirmed that this is mostly for population control, to keep tons of new free players from invading the Moors.
Anything that you think is noteworthy? Leave a comment, let me know!
See you in-game!
LOTRO Free-to-Play: Tier Structure
Jun 6th
One of the most confusing things about this change from a subscription model to a Free-to-Play model is what each of the different tiers will offer you. Turbine has created this great chart that show you what each of the three tiers gets you.
Free Players are those players who download the game and play without buying a subscription or buiyng any Turbine Points from the LOTRO Store.
Premium Players are players who have paid money to purchase Turbine Points from the Turbine Store at some point. Players who earn points and game to use will NOT be upgrade to Premium.
VIP Players are those who have a Lifetime Account or who pay for a month-to-month or multi-month subscription to the game. This is the only Tier that receive an “allowance” of points each month.

| TURBINE POINTS | 500/month Free (can purchase more) or earn thru gameplay |

One quick note:
- If you bought Mines of Moria, Siege of Mirkwood or The Adventurer’s Pack, you get you can expand on some of the features without purchasing Turbine Points. One example would be the character slots. If you Purchased the Adventurer’s Pack, you can have all of the character slots that you have earned.
A fairly detailed list explaining the different tiers.
See you in-game!
