Skirmishes
Instance Marks v Boss Drops
Aug 11th
After playing around on beta and thinking about the new design of instances, I have decided that I do not like the way rewards are set up, at least as we currently know them. Dev Diary 2 on Instances explains it well. Basically, we will be able to run instances through the Skirmish interface (now called Instance Join) and we will acquire a similar kind of Mark from each instance. Unique drops will be available from a vendor instead of from bosses, and only a “Legendary Item jackpot” will exist on the end boss, aside from the Marks, of course.
It sounds simple and lovely in concept, but I am really going to miss the pursuit of pieces from a specific boss. Although the gear available from places like Annuminas and Helegrod is beautiful, it is all available through the Classic skirmish vendor. No longer will I be trying again and again for a specific piece and awarded eventually with not only the armor itself, but also a host of memories associated with its acquisition. Instead, I will run whatever instance I run over and over, all of them coalescing into a single grind in my mind, and the gear I acquire at the end of it will be devoid of a connection to individual experiences.

The Skirmish Experiment – The Finale
Aug 8th
What a long, strange trip it’s been. 15 levels solely through skirmishes. I decided to end the skirmish experiment while I was on holidays because I wanted to continue leveling my Rune-Keeper, but I didn’t always have the time to go in and run a skirmish, as quick as they are.
My original goal was to test out a few different ways of leveling characters and to report on my experiences to help readers of the blog figure out what would be the best way to level a character for them. I now think that perhaps this original goal was a little flawed.
First of all, I don’t think that there is a “best” way to level a character. When I first started the skirmish experiment, I thought that best meant fastest. Now I’m not so sure. With the deed and trait system being set up the way that it is, power leveling is discouraged. By power leveling, I mean getting to the top level by doing the least amount of content possible, therefore getting there as quick as possible.
Skirmish Experiment: From one Soldier to Another
May 31st
So far Almarune is up to level 38, and I’ve been continuing the skirmish experiment with great joy. I’m really liking the fact that I can pop onto my Rune Keeper and just do a few of the skirmishes without having to run around from one place to the other as you have to with quests.
I’ve made a few observation about this experiment, as I’ve been leveling:
- I’m still really missing the +25% XP bonus that we got on skirmishes when they launched.
- I make quite a bit of gold. I started with 400 silver at level 30, and at the moment, I’ve got 4 Gold and 600 silver. I’m just about to get my Horse however, so that will go down significantly. What this does show, however, is that you can definitely make money doing skirmishes.
I’ve tried a few different things while going through the skirmishes to see if I could make the experience a little faster, gain a little more XP, etc.

Deed Experiment, ummm, I mean Skirmish Experiment!
Apr 28th
As many of you know, I’ve been working on a Deed Experiment for a while now. What was the Deed Experiment? I was trying to level my Rune Keeper from level 10 strictly through completing deeds. My goal was to see what that would be like, and what the character would be like when they reached maxed level. As many people commented, yes, it’s possible, and no, it’s not fun.
Skirmish Starter Quest Frustration
Jan 4th
I am now on my third character that is getting into skirmishes. So far, I’ve had Almazar, my Guardian, and also my Warden, complete the Skirmish Starter quest and get into Skirmishes. Now, with my hunter, I’m having to go through this again. I have 6 other alts. This madness has to stop.
No, I’m not talking about my alt-aholism. I’m talking about having to find an area with enemies of the right level, killing enough of them to get the 10 War Orders and then the Target List, going back to the Skirmish Captain, and then going through the two intro instances. Finally, after all that, I can finally take part in Skirmishes with my characters. What is it about Turbine that they sometimes feel as if they need to gate something extremely cool and fun (*cough* level 35 mount anyone *cough*) with something boring, useless and time consuming.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I do think that with my first character, the intro skirmishes where important and necessary. In fact, I could even see the argument being made that they are important with every character, as they will give me a feel for how that class plays in skirmishes. However, the war orders quest? Come on!
Here is my suggestion Turbine: Get rid of the War Orders quest, or at least set it to once per account. Perhaps you could have a check box so that people could opt out of doing that quest. If not, could you please explain why we need to do this quest to unlock Skirmishes?
I hit level 30 the other night with my hunter, and thought “Woohoo! Skirmishes, here I come!”, but then I realized that I would have to complete the starter quest and actually groaned “Not again….” That’s not fun for me. To make it worse, when I did finally convince myself to get out and do the quest, I had very bad luck with the drop rate. Grrrrr.
All that being said, I still love the Skirmish system. I think that my play style is perfectly suited for them, and in fact, Almazar has gained most of his levels though Skirmishes since the launch of Siege Of Mirkwood. Mind you, I don’t think I could level EVERY character through skirmishes, but it’s still a great diversion from questing.
See you in game!
EDIT: jwbarry posted the following on the thread that I had started on the LOTRO forums:
For an upcoming patch/book the quest has been streamlined to always drop with every kill. It’s not being removed because it serves a story purpose to help tie skirmishes to the real world, something very important because Skirmish Join untethers that. Having a story tie is important with a lack of a physical tie.
The second (and really primary) reason the quest exists in the first place was to distribute access across the land rush of Mirkwood opening and, while allowing everyone access to skirmishes, putting in a bell curve distribution on the density of that access, thus making the servers as happy as possible. We decided this was better done through a quest with random drops that the player had some control of, than just assigning each character a random delay arbitrarily. Tying it to the account will likely not happen. With the changes it’s been reduced to a guaranteed 10 kills, you will get a drop with every monster, so it’s fast enough to move through as you’re doing other things.
This sounds like a good compromise. I think that originally, my post was written in frustration after having horrible luck with drop rates trying to get the War Orders. Although I still won’t be having fun when I run it through with my alts, at least it is guaranteed to only take 11 kills (hopefully it will be 100% drop rate for the Target List too!) so this is definitely something I can live with. Thanks for thinking ahead, Turbine!
Skirmish Soldier Roles
Dec 30th
Skirmishes are one of the key elements of the Siege of Mirkwood expansion. They add a whole new dimension to the game, and have their own “rules” and “requirements”. One of the main components of skirmishes is the use of soldiers. There are 6 soldiers for players to choose from, and sometimes this choice can be a little daunting. Which soldier do I choose? Do I take a herbalist? We all need to be healed sometimes, right? Do I take a protector? If I can keep the enemies off me, I won’t need heals, right?
This post is not meant to be a detailed look at each and every single skill that the soldiers have. Nor is it meant to be a detailed look at where the soldiers end up when you level them fully. This post is meant to help those of you struggling to find the right soldier for your character class and play style.
There is no perfect answer. No, if you are a guardian, you don’t have to pick a herbalist, although that would be a really good choice for a captain. Instead, think of what you want your soldier to do, what types of skirmishes you are going to play, and what you yourself bring to each Skirmish that you play.
Soldier Roles
There are 6 different roles that you can have your soldier play. Although these are identical to character classes, there is a distinct correlation between the roles and some of the character classes. The role which you pick for your soldier also affects where the soldier tries to stand in relation to you, so it will affect how it engages the enemy. The roles also have default races that they start off as (i.e. A protector starts as a dwarf) but you can change this by purchasing cosmetic traits from the Skirmish vendor.
I tested all of the different soldier classes, mostly using Almazar, my dwarf Guardian. I had him using the Guardian’s Defense stance (shield focused) for all of them except for the protector, for which I put Almazar into Overpower stance (DPS).
Cosmetic Items for Soldiers

I’m currently working on a post about Skirmish Soldiers and their abilities, and while doing some research, I found this post which included some links to screenshots of some of the cosmetic items available to soldiers.
There are more links in posts that follow the one that I linked, so keep scrolling down and you’ll find some more.

Quick Thoughs on the Siege of Mirkwood Launch
Dec 2nd
It’s very late at night, and I should be in bed. The problem, you see, is that Siege of Mirkwood launched last night, and I’ve had the fortune of playing skirmishes all night. Well, most of the night. I did get a chance to create a couple of alts. Suprise! I bet you didn’t think that was going to happen.
Back to the topic of the Siege of Mirkwood launch. I think that Turbine did a fantastic job of launching the expansion. Although there where some issues on Brandywine and Landroval, I didn’t here of anything on any other servers.
As far as skirmishes go, I have to say that they are a blast! We ran through several of them this evening with a smaller group, just three of us, and we enjoyed it tremendously. Although we had a little difficulty in getting everything sorted out as far as Soldier traits go, and Bill kept on having issues with his soldier’s health bar disappearing, we still enjoyed ourselves.
A couple of tips:
1) Realize that there is a quest that you need to do before you have a chance to get into skirmishes. After you finish that quest (which is a pain in the but!), you complete 2 tutorial skirmishes, and then you’re free to create/join any skirmishes available to characters of your level. The quest that you have to finish involves collecting 10 “War Orders” and 1 “Target List” from mobs (Goblins, Orc, Trolls, Warg-Riders, etc) that are approximately your level. These do not drop on every kill. Kind of a pain to have to do this before you enter the skirmishes. Skirmish Tutorials = Good, Quest = Boring and Frustrating.
