I have been a busy young warg.  My jaws are well and truly crusted red, and the tantalizing scent of Hobbit, Man, Elf, and Dwarf remains in my nostrils.

As I am scouting around Lugazug, desperately hoping to join the fight to retake this keep that the conniving Freeps have wrested from our control, I stumble into the path of a large and hungry pack of wargs I have never met before.  I feel humbled in their presence and most honoured to be invited into their pack.  The leader whips me into shape immediately.  “No moving out of turn, obey all orders, stay where you’re told to stay, attack when and whom you’re told to attack!  Got it, pup?”  I bow low before him, careful to avoid staring into his startling bright, vicious eyes.

We race across the plains like an invisible nightmare.  A force upstoppable, dominating all Freeps who chance across our path.  As one, our pack stalks mercilessly any and all who dare try invading our space.

Our leader is not interested in retaking Lugazug.  He says that having that one small victory will keep the Freeps feeling hopeful, keep them overconfident and looking for trouble, which, in the end, will be their undoing as our silent band descends upon them and metes out doom to all.

After some time spent crouching low, waiting for orders, moving when I am told to move, pouncing and mauling when told to attack, feeling the thundering of my blood in my veins as we gain victory upon victory, I suddenly feel — different.

My muscles feel like they are exploding under my skin. I feel taller, my eyesight is sharper, my hearing more acute.  Even my thoughts come more quickly and more clearly.

“Congratulations, pup,” my pack growls in unison.  The leader regards me thoughfully.  “You have gained a Rank,” he informs me.  “In our ever-lasting war against Men and Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits, you have just taken your first step towards being formidable and deadly.  In time, your name will become feared and hated by the Freeps.  You have done well.  But now — again we HUNT!”  A truly terrifying howl rises up from the throats of my companions.

Oh how I love this life!
